I’ve got to agree with Derrick about one thing. The people in the apartment building were weird. They spent half their time gossiping about each other and the other half ignoring what each other was doing. The teenagers made out in the hallways and got stoned on the roof. The gays drifted from door to door borrowing butter, sugar and milk. I don’t know if they ever bought these items themselves. Small children tried to kill themselves by tumbling down the stairs on tricycles and skate- boards. Two drunks lived across from each other. They started their day as friends and were fighting by night.

I discovered that women with children were the first infantry in the battle for the laundry room. There was no question of coming near it before noon without risking knocking over someone who hasn’t quite learned to walk on two legs. After that, there was a rapid exchange of the working- class crowd so synchronized, I strongly suspect they worked out a time schedule. It wasn’t until after eight p.m. that the laundry room settled down enough to venture into it.

We squeezed our first laundry night in after waiting for five teenagers who had found disfavor with their mothers and were washing their clothes in between smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, and two gay couples who waited on each other so politely, I wanted to stuff them in a dryer. It was nearly midnight. The robust activity that had occupied most of the day had quieted down, other then the echoing steps of a few night workers leaving their apartments and the shuffle of an insomniac the first floor up.

I had just played my first game of Canasta with the old lady earlier that day. Myra had spent her time with Randall and was curious to know every detail. “What happened? Did you have fun?” She began dropping clothes into the machines, jeans with whites, reds with pastels, all mumble-jumble.

“Don’t,” I said, stopping her. “I’ll tell you what. I’ll sort the clothes. You put in the soap and start the machines.”

“Fine,” she agreed, then gave me a coquettish look. “So? What happened at the evil old lady’s house? Did she give you cookies and milk?”

“She had these very delicate little pecan tarts and very bad coffee. We won the Canasta game. She was happy. She wants me to come back next week.”

“Oh. You should let the others win once in a while or they won’t like you.”

We finished filling the machines and she scooted up on a dryer, crossing her ankles in front of her. “Tell me what they talked about. They must have had some ripe things to say.”

I dropped some coins into the soda machine for a bottled water and sat back in a plastic chair, my legs sprawled. “She ranted a bit about some of the neighbors, but she talked a lot about Tanya.”

The little bottom squirmed against the top of the dryer impatiently. “She said that Tanya was very quiet and studious until she met four gigolos.
